A 2017 survey by Joannie Dobbs, assistant specialist in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, found that about 50 percent of UH Mānoa undergraduate students who completed the survey have experienced food insecurity and about 37 percent of UH Mānoa undergraduate students who completed the survey are experiencing moderate to severe hunger.
In response to this, through generous alumni donations, the CTAHR student lounge was opened in 2018. The lounge offers a safe and quiet environment for students to study, relax and enjoy a free meal from the fully stocked pantry.
Health and emotional issues related to hunger can negatively affect a student's education, including a student's ability to learn, their grade point average and the time needed to complete their degree. The added emotional burden caused by hunger can also prevent a student from fully experiencing the fun side of university life.
Donate today to help us keep our lounge pantry stocked with healthy meals to FEED CTAHR student success.
