The Hawai‘i State Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism estimates that as many as 10,000 jobs have been lost in West Maui. With so many people out of work, many will be considering a career change. As rebuilding in Lāhainā begins, there will be an increased need for qualified tradespeople. UHERO predicts that Hawai‘i may need as many as 3,000 additional construction workers to help rebuild a town that has lost 2,000 homes and 2,300 structures. As the community carefully considers how to move forward from the wildfire catastrophe, UH Maui College stands ready to help in the best way it can: by working with the community to identify where education can make the biggest impact for recovery efforts. As families continue to move off island, we need an increased workforce in every field.
