Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology is a research unit of UH Mānoa where more than 200 passionate faculty, graduate students, and staff research everything from marine microbes to marine mammals so we may better understand and steward the ocean, locally and globally. From its unparalleled setting on Moku o Loʻe, a storied islet steeped in Hawaiian culture and surrounded by a living coral reef, we connect research excellence, transformative education, and community engagement to ensure the health of our waters.
Our research is collaborative, and our team is meeting this moment by asking and answering the key questions for securing ocean health – now, and into the future. HIMB’s Geometric Ecology Lab is joining forces with our Coral Resilience and ToBo Labs in “Reefense,” a project combining coral genetics with coral morphology to “reverse engineer” a coastline poised to withstand unprecedented pressures. With nature as our guide, we innovate the solutions we need today for a secure coast tomorrow.
At HIMB, we harness the latest technology to better understand the physiology of some of the ocean’s largest and farthest trekking inhabitants, so we can understand what they need to thrive. In recent months, our Marine Mammal Research Program has made a series of scientific breakthroughs on the physiology of dolphins, whales, and Hawaiian monk seals. Whether we are designating humpback whales as “bubble net” tool wielders, detecting a never-heard-before monk seal call, or unraveling the energetic needs of humpback whale mothers and calves, our team is expanding our collective understanding of ocean life, and mapping what they need to survive.
There has never been a more exciting time to explore the ocean, and our fish researchers are employing new techniques in natural laboratories throughout the globe that challenge our understanding of where and how fish survive. HIMB’s Fish Resilience Lab is studying how fish cope in Earth’s hottest waters – in the Arabian Gulf – to understand how they can adapt to a warming world. Researchers in the ToBo Lab are teaming up with National Geographic’s Pristine Seas Expedition, coding samples of environmental DNA from Papua New Guinea to understand where life abounds in Earth’s vast ocean. HIMB goes to great depths to explore, understand, and protect.
Dive in, and join HIMB in our journey to ensure the health of our waters! A contribution to our Director’s Innovation Fund will support the many ways HIMB connects research excellence, transformative education, and stewardship.
